beijing nightlifeIn comparison with Beijing’s majesty, prosperity and its hustle crowds during day time, the night of Beijing, however, seems to be a place of such haunting beauty as to make travelers ignore the call of their homelands and linger here forever. A congenial atmosphere of tranquility pervades the city, mild but carrying on a dubious affinity that attracts a description of the gorgeousness but only to be found lost in words. Now a famous ancient capital of venerable civilization, now a fashionable metropolis of fast-paced life — the dual-profiles in entirely different personality, has always been a company you could use for embracement, an old friend awaits through time that overflows.

As night draws its curtain, the city turns even more tender and charming. Colorful lanterns are lit up, the originally crowded flowing of people and vehicles on the streets in rush hours, now in vesture of brilliant ornamentation, has been replaced by a smoothly running transportation and those who ‘d like to enjoy a walk after super. Quite a few department stores and shops have extended their business hours till 10pm late, which suffices greatly the need for shopping — either to those retired from a whole day’s work fatiguing or to “night owls” used to seeking for recreation especially at nights.

“Always strikes my mind are those lonely and lacrimose nights when I separated with my boyfriend. Extremely dejected and unable to survive the nights, I just once again, knocked at the door of XCLUB to join my ever cherished game “Mafia”(or Murderer and Detective Game)”, said a lady with an alias of “25th Feb”, freelancer, aged 30. You can find numerous such “killing clubs” in Beijing, open from 6pm to 8am, or 2pm to 8am on weekends. What’s different of such clubs from others is that alcohols don’t rule more enticingly than the game does itself, where bunch of players sit together in a circle, each unrestrainedly in fervor of piquancy, never left in solitude.

“As long as I have leisure time, I would drive without hesitation directly towards the ‘Reservoir’(located in Beijing outskirts, also named Miyun reservoir) for a night fishing. I am always enamoured of such nights as ambushing beside the river, fishing in pure tranquility and clear air”, said Den, male, aged 34, CEO of an internet company. Just to think an evening BBQ party by the streams, with guitar folk-song music among the woods would be refreshing; but the real joy is that fishing is surely full of suspense in “contesting with the fish” and the tension in expecting your game to emerge out of water, the kind of focused attention…all these emotional turns is just like a symbol of life, where despair and hope exist at once.

beijing life, beijing nightlife, beijing night streetOn top of the noted cuisine streets and restaurants counts the “Ghost Street”(or Gui Street”),where over half of the restaurants are open 24 hours (here comes the name ‘Ghost Street’) providing you with featured dishes typical of Beijing: roasted fish, hot pot, sea food like spicy lobster…all this will well satisfy your palate. Another destination worth mentioning is “Nan Luo Gu Xiang”(or South Lane of percussion), where exquisitely displayed bars in serried ranks hide from the huge shadow of Beijing historic relics of renown — the Bell and Toll Towers, and tiers of Chinese pagoda trees, their leaves interwoven perching on tiles passed along from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Most bars there are book bars containing home-like sofa, antique lamps and book shelves with peeling-covered books and magazines free for reading. Under the blue-grey of the immense heaven, all is waiting for you is a sleepless night in Beijing.
